Lend a drill to a neighbour, give it a return date, and record the handback. This ledger keeps a date and a name. It does not keep money, and it has no clock of its own — a loan ends when a person says it ended, and not a moment before.
What this ledger does and does not do. It has no clock inside it. Nothing here decides that a loan has finished, ever; an overdue loan still reads as out, because an item in somebody else's house does not come back by being late. Only the Record the return button — pressed by the borrower, or by the steward who owns the item — writes a return, and it writes one exactly once. It cannot check who you are: whoever's name you type is the name the ledger keeps. And it cannot tell you whether the drill came back with all its bits. It records that somebody said it did.
